Last week, jammed between Sound Symposium and the construction video project, I got asked to do a portrait of Mr. Clyde Wells, esteemed jurist, former Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and recently retired as Chief Justice of the Newfoundland Supreme Court. There was little time and our schedules were not lining up but there was no way I was going to turn it down. As a news photographer in the 90’s I covered him when he was the Premier during the Meech Lake debates, hard economic times in the province and followed him around on a few election campaigns. We also crossed professional paths in his private life as a lawyer and while he was Chief Justice in the Newfoundland Supreme Court. He was always the gentleman and one of the few civil and rational voices in the savagery known as Newfoundland politics. This was my first chance to do a proper portrait. Thank you Mr. Wells. It was my pleasure.
