The weather has been horrid in Newfoundland so far this spring and summer so we’ve taken advantage of the few nice days to get outdoors and do what we love … explore Newfoundland! I also had the unexpected pleasure of photographing my friend and excellent climber, Carla, who is back on the east coast for the summer.

Climbing on the Fair Islands
We had a great rock climbing and camping trip with the Newfoundland Section of the Alpine Club of Canada to the Fair Islands in Bonavista Bay on Newfoundland’s north east coast. Lots to explore and lots of new rock for bouldering, top rope and trad climbing.

Explore Newfoundland Project 2015
#EXPLORE NEWFOUNDLAND ….adventures in the Newfoundland outdoors is our new project for 2015 where we will be pursuing the spirit of travel, exploration, adventure and the testing of ones physical limits looking for great stories, powerful photos and engaging video of the people who take on the challenges of the land, sea and environment.
In the past couple of years I have been getting re-acquainted with the outdoors and the opportunities for adventure it offers. Hiking, climbing, skiing and any number of human powered endeavors are only minutes out your door in Canada’s most eastern province. We have gathered of a few photos from last year to get our project website up and running and throughout the year we will be adding more photos, video and stories as we seek out the best Newfoundland has to offer in outdoor adventure.
So far this year we have been ice climbing on Cape Broyle and snow shoe racing on Three Pond Barrens. In the next few weeks we’ll be back with new cross-country skiing. Stay tuned for trail running, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and to close out the summer a back country hiking and camping trip through Gros Morne National Park.

Flatrock Fest 2014 story on the ACC National website
Far from the Rocky Mountains, out on the eastern edge of the country you’ll find the small but busy Newfoundland and Labrador Section of the ACC. On one weekend in August, at one of the most unique and spectacular climbing crags in Canada, you’ll find the annual Flatrock Climbing Festival – the biggest event in Newfoundland climbing. This year’s festival ran Saturday August 16.
The seaside cliffs in the fishing village of Flatrock, Newfoundland, 30km north of St. John’s, were first identified as a potential crag in the early 1990’s by a very small group of local climbers and have been used and developed ever since by the growing local climbing community. It has become the prime climbing area in the province with more than 40 routes on four different crags as well as plenty of bouldering set in dramatic coastal scenery. ….MORE on the ACC website
