Our latest shoot for the NSO was a cool, breezy evening on the southside of St John’s harbour with percussionist, Whitney Rowe. © 2015 Greg Locke

NSO Season Subscription brochure
The NSO 2015/16 season subscription brochure is finally out with violinist Jessica Pereversoff on the cover. Designed by Perfect Day Canada and printed by Quikprint in St John’s. We shot this on a cold, wet, windy March day. Challenging for all involved! …but mostly Jessica. Hair and Makeup by Olivia Chafe and Erinn Locke on assisting duties.
NSO Portraits 2015 have started
We’re deliriously happy to be back shooting portraits of the musicians of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra for the 2015/16 season. We kicked it off with Jessica Pereversoff on a stormy March day with torrential rain and 100km winds! …we took shelter in an empty car park and carried on! Between running back and forth to the car to warm up we managed to get the pavement swept of snow and the lights up and tied down. Six Nikon Speedlights and a lot of sandbags and rope. Great subjects and a great crew always seem to make it happen!. Lighting assistant Erinn Locke, hair and makeup by Olivia Chafe. Thanks to musicians Jessica Pereversoff and Cameron Maclellan (whose pictures you will see soon) for being such good sports and total pros. © 2015 Greg Locke

NSO cellist Rachel Gauntlett
So lucky to get to photograph Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra cellist, Rachel Gauntlett, again this week. Rachel was the first portrait we did when we started The NSO Portraits project nearly two years ago. We photographed her in the Newman Wine Vaults. If you are thinking, hey wait a minute, isn’t it winter in Newfoundland you would be right. We got out of the snow in an empty parking garage but Rachel still had to tough it out for the nearly 2 hour photo shoot in sub zero temps. Talented, beautiful and ….tough! You should visit her website at www.rachelgauntlett.com. Photo by Greg Locke © 2014.
At The Silver Ball with the NSO
Had a wonderful evening at the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra’s annual Silver Ball on Saturday night. Technically, I wasn’t working (just enjoying the evening) but I had my trusty little Fuji X20 with me and never could let a nice photo pass by. So, I snuck into the cello section to get this shot of Sarah-Jane Johnson. Ms Johnson is a MUN Music masters student and recipient of the Suncor Energy Strings Fellowship. Photo by Greg Locke © 2014.
Carole Bestvater for NSO Portraits

NSO violinist Carole Bestvater photographed on location in Corner brook, Newfoundland by Greg Locke for The NSO Project © 2013 -www.greglocke.com
Well!!!! ….here in St. John’s, Newfoundland its Old Christmas Day (the 12th Day of Christmas) …and the real Christmas Day for many of the Christian cultures. The sun is out power is back on after a howler of a winter storm and rolling blackouts across the entire island for the past 3 days. So its back to work for as long as the power stays on. First thing is to clean of a few jobs left over from before the holidays such as a final edit of the amazing Carole Bestvater’s photo shoot. We shot this as the first in a new series for the NSO Portraits Project in a church yard in Corner Brook, Newfoundland while the Newfoundland symphony Orchestra was on tour with it Christmas Pops Tour. It was sunrise, in the snow and -20c degrees.
Check out our previous work on The NSO Project and stay tuned for our new adventures with the incredible musicians of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra.
Eleanor McCain in Newfoundland with NSO
Our last major shoot of 2013 could not have been more pleasurable. Four days on tour on the west coast of Newfoundland with the brilliant musicians and crew of Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and vocalist Eleanor McCain for the Christmas Pops Tour. We stole Eleanor away from rehearsals to play in the snow and shoot some photos in wintery Corner Brook. But at -20C it was a pretty quick shoot.!

Sinfonia receives resounding applause
- By Jean Snook
Published on October 15, 2013
Saturday evening’s Sinfonia concert of 18th-century music had the D.F. Cook Recital Hall filled to near capacity.
The audience was greeted in the lobby by life-size silk-screen panels of three of the orchestra members: yet another application of Greg Locke’s inspired photographs that were featured in The Telegram in the summer, that grace the program booklets for the 2013/2014 season, and that won Locke The Telegram’s Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Volunteer.
Locke’s idea of photographing the musicians with their instruments outside the concert hall, in colour, in the community and by the sea, helps put the faces to the names of individual players, while emphasizing that Newfoundland now has a symphony orchestra of which we can be very proud. …more
