One of my last shoots of the summer was with the talented young harpist, Sarah Veber from St Philip’s, Newfoundland. She studies music in Ottawa but will be returning to St John’s to play with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra for selected concerts this season beginning with the Nov 11 performance of Mozart’s Requiem at the NSO MASTERWORKS 2; HONOUR. REFLECT. REMEMBER at the historic Basilica of Saint John The Baptist. We photographed her in a meadow in her home town overlooking Conception Bay, Newfoundland.

Little Drummer Girl
Our latest shoot for the NSO was a cool, breezy evening on the southside of St John’s harbour with percussionist, Whitney Rowe. © 2015 Greg Locke
NSO cellist Rachel Gauntlett
So lucky to get to photograph Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra cellist, Rachel Gauntlett, again this week. Rachel was the first portrait we did when we started The NSO Portraits project nearly two years ago. We photographed her in the Newman Wine Vaults. If you are thinking, hey wait a minute, isn’t it winter in Newfoundland you would be right. We got out of the snow in an empty parking garage but Rachel still had to tough it out for the nearly 2 hour photo shoot in sub zero temps. Talented, beautiful and ….tough! You should visit her website at www.rachelgauntlett.com. Photo by Greg Locke © 2014.
MUN Music musician
Had the pleasure of photographing some of the students at Memorial University’s School of Music last week. For this shot Kassandra and her friends where good enough to drag this piano outside on a freezing cold evening and risk a little frost bite. They where great sports and proved that if make the effort instead of doing easy shot you will be rewarded with something wonderful. THANKS GUYS!! Bye the way, Kassie’s music is a great blend of classical, jazz and even a little punk. Watch for her, she will be making waves. Photo by Greg Locke © 2013

The NSO Project – Marc David
This year we have embarked on a documentary and portrait project with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and on the weekend we kicked off the portrait series with conductor and Musical Director, Marc David, at the Queen’s Battery on Signal Hill in St. John’s. The light was awesome, especially the stuff we brought ourselves …and the fog stayed right where I asked it. As beautiful as it looked it was still pretty cold and we were all happy that it went well and ended quickly. …we got the blood flowing again with the march down the hill to the cars.
Look for more on this project when we set up the gallery in our PROJECTS section soon. We have an ambitious schedule over the summer and great locations for the ever accommodating NSO musicians.
