On the road in Parts Unknown

Its no big secret that editorial photography and photojournalism in general has taken a big hit over the past few years. There are very few outlets that actually pay or commission this work any more and it is now not more than a hobby for individuals who can afford to do it and have some vision or sence of adventure. This is why getting to work on Anthony Bourdain’s, Parts Unknown in 2018 was not only a great honour but a nice change of pace photographically for me as I return, briefly, to my “old life” …on the road with a couple of cameras.

The death of Bourdain not long after the Newfoundland segment of the TV show and the web stories launched only made it more poignant for me. He was a big person with a big heart who loved travel and telling stories. Food was the vector. Something all humans have in common regardless of all our other differences. The TV/video shows are great but the Parts Unknown Website and its companion site, Roads and Kingdoms are an expansion of the TV series and a testament to his dedication for journalism …get out their on the road.

In fact, Roads and Kingdoms may well be the best or travel/adventure journalism out their now. Do yourself a favour and go visit.

NAPE PTSD public awareness campaign

Many people are subject to traumatic experiences in their job. Some repeatedly, some just once. But all can result in PTSD. And its not always the obvious people like soldiers and first responders. It can be shop keepers, teachers, taxi drivers, clergy, journalists …anyone. Any worker who has been robbed, assaulted, harassed on the job or witnesses a traumatic event can be afflicted with PTSD. I’m proud to have been a part of this public service campaign by the Newfoundland Association of Public Employees to bring workplace mental health legislation to the province for all workers.

Sound Art

Every two years since 1983 Sound Symposium has been happening in Newfoundland, Canada at the edge of the North Atlantic. Founded by classical musician and percussionist, Don Wherry, the event grew from a bunch of avant garde musician friends to a ten day international festival of new music, performing and sound art with everything from classical and jazz musicians experimenting with new sound, dance and theatre to audio engineers and sculptures creating audio art installations in the wild coastal environment. The soundscapes created have become the hallmark of Sound Symposium which happens once again in July of 2014.

We shot this video at a 2012 Sound Symposium event organized by Gayle Young, a sound artist and founder of Music Works magazine. She led a group of musicians to remote  Doctor’s Cove, Newfoundland, 100km south of St. John’s to find resonant rocks and build lithophones.
