Endless Summer 2015

Chantelle-LanceCovePoint-NL-WEB-1421

OK, that might be a bit delusional. July was a weather torture test in Newfoundland and “Winter is Coming” has become “I told you so” as December gets  a firm grip on us and we resign ourselves to the dark months.   ….BUT!  August was awesome and the summer stretched well into October so we got to do some great “fall” shooting that looked like an endless summer. A little bit of climbing with the Newfoundland Youth Team in Stiles Cove,  yoga in the Manuals River with climber and circus aerialist Keely Whitelaw, getting dirty in the political trenches with Marg, Princess Warrior and glorious “summer” photos with NSO musicians Chantelle Jubinville and newest member Rosemary Lawton. The remote sandy beach at Lance Cove Point at the southern tip of the Avalon Peninsula is a match of anything in the tropics …ok, the temps were chilly but it LOOKS like the Caribbean! We took sheep for a boat ride on the islands off Tors Cove, danced with Katie Hardy at Cape Spear and it even made our shoots with Toromont CAT much more pleasurable. Our vacation adventures in August saw us out on the road kayaking, canoeing and exploring the out-of-the-way areas of north east coast of the island. So, here is good-bye to summer and hello winter. Bring it on. Skiing and ice climbing coming up.

Working with Marg!

marg-F&O_GREGLOCKE-3714Such a great pleasure with work with Mary Walsh and her small guerrilla team on the Marg Brings Change campaign during the 2015 election. You can check out all the videos, memes and posters at margbringschange.ca. …and MARG!, Princess Warrior, didn’t have to smite anyone. Although the Canadian voter certainly smited Stephen Harper and the Conservative party. Canada now returns to regular programming.

Returning to rural Newfoundland

Its was nice to return to some old school documentary photography work this summer. I spent a lot of time travelling around Newfoundland, revisiting many of the places I visited as a photojournalist many years ago resulting in the book with Michael Crummey, NEWFOUNDLAND …journey into a lost nation.

Once again, travelling light with two cameras, two lenses and no lights, looking for those little flashes of humanity that tell the stories of a culture and society.

I was surprised and happy to see that the old ways are still out there despite the destroyed fishery, the exodus of people for rural Newfoundland and the “Disneyfication” of culture that comes with an influx of tourism. Sadly, there are so few public outlets for this type of work anymore. The demise of the big news, current affairs and geographical magazines and newspapers mean these stories go untold. Thankfully there are a few dedicated online publication who do still produce good journalism and current affairs. One of those is Facts & Opinions.  This story of rural Newfoundland and more photos can be found on their website. Do check out the story, Life Goes on in Rural Newfoundland.

Climbing with Carla

The weather has been horrid in Newfoundland so far this spring and summer so we’ve taken advantage of the few nice days to get outdoors and do what we love … explore Newfoundland! I also had the unexpected pleasure of photographing my friend and excellent climber, Carla, who is back on the east coast for the summer.

Climbing on the Fair Islands

ACC-FairIsland-2015_LOCKE-0663-WEBWe had a great rock climbing and camping trip with the Newfoundland Section of the Alpine Club of Canada to the Fair Islands in Bonavista Bay on Newfoundland’s north east coast. Lots to explore and lots of new rock for bouldering, top rope and trad climbing.

Foto Flashback

Spitfire-1-webIn 1982 I had been shooting news for a couple of years and was expanding my perspectives and trying some commercial and advertising photography. Doing a little organization in the file room this week I found this 35mm Kodak Extachrome 64 transparency. As I recall, there wasn’t much lighting but lots of reflectors and graduated filters. It was an instant flashback to a warm summer evening, a fun car on a long drive with a fun crew. One of my first paid ad shoots it was for a friend who owned an import auto business. I can almost smell that English leather interior now. …greg

Explore Newfoundland Project 2015

#EXPLORE NEWFOUNDLAND ….adventures in the Newfoundland outdoors is our new project for 2015 where we will be pursuing the spirit of travel, exploration, adventure and the testing of ones physical limits looking for great stories, powerful photos and engaging video of the people who take on the challenges of the land, sea and environment.

In the past couple of years I have been getting re-acquainted with the outdoors and the opportunities for adventure it offers. Hiking, climbing, skiing and any number of human powered endeavors are only minutes out your door in Canada’s most eastern province. We have gathered of a few photos from last year to get our project website up and running and throughout the year we will be adding more photos, video and stories as we seek out the best Newfoundland has to offer in outdoor adventure.

So far this year we have been ice climbing on Cape Broyle and snow shoe racing on Three Pond Barrens. In the next few weeks we’ll be back with new cross-country skiing. Stay tuned for trail running, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and to close out the summer a back country hiking and camping trip through Gros Morne National Park.
